Vyvanse is a prodrug of dextroamphetamine. After oral administration, enzymes in red blood cells convert lisdexamfetamine into active dextroamphetamine. This conversion happens gradually, producing a steady release of active drug over 10–12 hours rather than a sharp spike and crash.
Dextroamphetamine increases the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. These neurotransmitters play key roles in attention, motivation, and impulse control — the areas most affected in ADHD and BED.
